Soil is abrasive.  The most damaging thing to carpet isn’t spills—it’s dry particulates being ground into the fibers.  High-traffic areas should be vacuumed more frequently to prevent premature wear.  If your vacuum has an adjustable beater bar (brush), set it to the highest level where you still feel a little friction on the carpet.
